The skin color of Jesus Christ probably don’t matter in countries where the majority of people are similar in complexion, but in the Western culture, skin color is a huge deal, but many white Christians try to act like color doesn’t matter when it comes to Jesus.
Gotquestions.org is a Christian website that simply answers questions about Christianity. On their about page it reads “Got Questions Ministries seeks to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by providing biblical, applicable, and timely answers to spiritually related questions through an internet presence.”
I typed in “Was Jesus Black.” In the first paragraph, one if the sentences read, “Does it really matter that we know the color of Jesus’ skin—whether He was black, yellow, brown, or white?”
Yes, it does matter. The fact that Jesus being described as a Jew in the Bible means that he likely had light to dark brown skin, but many Christian websites have photos depicting Jesus was fair skin, proves that knowing what Jesus looked like is crucial so that we stop making Jesus look like us so we feel comfortable.
If you Google Jesus, you’ll see a bunch of photos of a white man with long brown hair. Not a man of light or dark brown skin. The actor who played Jesus in The Passion and the actor who played Jesus in The Bible tv show were white men. This is why the color of Jesus matters.
Gotquestions.org argues that Jesus had light or brown dark skin, but Google and Hollywood says that Jesus was white. Children Bibles with pictures show Jesus as a white man unless the Bible is specifically made for children of color.
Color is a huge deal in America. The color of your skin determines whether a police officer peacefully arrest you or shoots you dead. The color of your skin determines your pay potential on your job. The color of your skin determines whether you can shop in an expensive store peacefully or be followed by security until you leave.
For centuries the color of your skin determined whether you were born a slave or a free man in America. For decades the color of your skin determined the quality of your education.
So the color of our savior, Jesus Christ, is very important. If Jesus was a white man, then that would support white people’s belief that they’re the superior race. White people don’t understand why color matters because their skin color has never hindered them from any opportunity. White people never had to fear for their life because of the color of their skin.
So if the color of Jesus really doesn’t matter then lets start seeing more depictions of Jesus with dark brown skin and hire actors with dark brown skin.
